Bicycles in Copenhagen
People
drive cars or take public transportation to go to school or work.
However, these modes of transportation emit harmful elements and
greenhouse gases, which lead to air pollution and global warming.
To stop this, more and more people in Copenhagen, capital city of
Denmark, choose to ride bikes.
Under the Danish government’s plan for the country to stop emitting
carbon dioxide by 2025, no cars are manufactured in Copenhagen.
And, the taxes for importing cars as well as parking fees are very
expensive. Moreover, oil prices are high enough to dissuade people
from owning their own cars.
That is why Copenhagen, which is the first city to have enacted
laws for bicycle-only roads and have also paved bicycle overpasses,
encourages more people to use these two-wheeled vehicles. The city
has roads for bikes only, where traffic lights and signs always
give priority to them ahead of other vehicles. Hotels in the city
must rent bikes to tourists, and buildings’ parking lots must reserve
spaces only for bicycles.
Riding bikes is good not only for the environment, but also for
people’s health. So, it may be strongly recommended that you hop
on a bike for both the environment and your health.
